What's the process for clients who are new to Michigan Optimal Movement Center? We all know that Rome wasn't built in a day, and since restoring your body's movement is no exception, we strive to make your personal goals as achievable as possible by crafting our services intentionally. First-time clients have the opportunity to try us out by booking their own customized Discovery Session - we'll start unpacking those restrictions with stretching and bodywork techniques, which will determine if we're a good match for you and your wellness goals, and begin planning the next steps in our partnership After your Discovery Session, you have the option to select from one of our Signature Packages - each specifically designed to keep you on track for change - or build your own wellness plan based on your individual needs

What type of work is done in a session?Every session is completely customized based on your individual needs - to achieve restored range of motion and a more optimal overall movement, the foundation of every FlexBlend Session is specialized stretch therapy (Fascial Stretch Therapy), integrated with various techniques of massage & bodywork (such as myofascial release, cupping, etc). There may also be instances where strengthening exercises are appropriate, and some personal training aspects (such as resistance band work, self-stretches, etc.) may be indicated to incorporate into your session as well.

I've never experienced Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) before - What is it? What should I expect?Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) is completely unique and different from traditional stretching and other modalities! FST Practitioners are certified through the Stretch to Win Institute in Chandler, AZ to stretch the connective tissues (nets of fascia) that run throughout your entire body in layers. We do table-based assisted stretch, focusing on the nets of fascia to improve your mobility. During your stretch-focused session: • You're fully dressed in comfortable, mobile clothes • You lie on a soft table in a comfortable, semi-private space that works great for FST • Soft table straps may be used to help stabilize one leg at a time as the practitioner stretches you • The practitioner will meet you where your tissue is at and work with you, not on you, for every session FST has a PAIN-FREE approach - so there's no forcing a stretch past where your mobility is meant to go, which eliminates risk of overstretching or injury. We work with your body with various gentle, effective movements to free up restrictions in the most productive way depending on you, specializing each session to fit your needs and goals.

What is fascia (fah-sha)? How does it work?Fascia is your system of connective tissue, made primarily of collagen, that runs throughout your entire body. It surrounds muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, organs, and even nerves. These nets of tissue work as a tensional network - the state of tension is essential both at rest and when you move since it's woven into all of our body's systems. When there is an imbalance along the nets (scar tissue, build-up of collagen, etc.), we work gently with your tissue to break up those build-ups and open up your mobility again to work functionally.
-
Can I do FST myself? Are the stretches something my friend can do for me?Nope! Any individual who is not certified through the Stretch to Win Institute should not attempt to replicate FST on themselves or a friend/family member. Certified FST Practitioners only - We're trained to work with deep connective tissue, and much of the work can't be seen by the outside eye. Fascial Stretch Therapy is different than the technique of myofascial release that's commonly used in massage therapy. We are completely unique to the Portage/Kalamazoo area, and The Stretch to Win Institute in Arizona is the only location in the United States to learn this technique. We've been trained to do FST directly from the creators of the technique themselves, Ann and Chris Frederick.
-
Do you offer massage therapy? Do you offer deep-tissue massage?Short Answer: Nope, we offer something completely different! When you enter our space, expect the box of traditional therapeutic care to be broken. We adapt each session to address your individual needs, locating restricted tissue that contributes to your imbalances to free up movement once again. We do this with the foundation of Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST), integrating aspects of massage therapy techniques such as myofascial release, cupping, and more when applicable for you. This system is specially designed to restore balance, ease tension, and unlock the potential for true freedom of movement.

What should I expect for my first session (aka Discovery Session)? Is there anything I need to do before I come in?Your intro session with us will be a combination of introductions, bodywork, & wellness-path planning. We'll review your client intake form prior to bodywork for the day - we begin with a specialized stretch technique, along with some soft-tissue work, & will move into planning your wellness-path & partnership with us if we're a good fit for you and your goals! Be sure to show up in mobile clothing for your session (think workout clothes), or you can change when you get here to ensure that we can work productively! There will be no need to disrobe for massage for your Discovery Session. We utilize the information you provide in your health history form to ensure that this work is best intended and indicated for you. If you happen to have something going on that contraindicates bodywork, we will be sure to contact you ahead of time and you will receive a full refund for your pre-paid Discovery Session.

Do I have to pick a Signature Package after my Discovery Session?Short answer: If we're a good fit for you and your goals, go for it! By no means are you required to choose a Signature Package before you leave your first session - in fact, we're all for it if you want to go home and think about what package would work best for you and enjoy how your body is feeling after your first session with us before deciding. If we're a fit for you and your goals, we'd love to partner with you on your wellness journey - and if not, your Discovery Session is a risk-free one-time appointment for you to try us out. There's always the option to book a la carte as well! Since restoring your body's movement takes time, we strive to make your personal goals as achievable as possible by crafting our packages to jump-start your wellness. We've combined bodywork, accountability, and consistency to keep you on track for change - it's up to you to commit to which one fits best for you!
-
How many sessions do you recommend to see/feel a difference?Everything is individualized! Your body's fascia and tissue will tell us how often bodywork is needed to reach your goals of optimal mobility and other objectives you may have - some tissues and fascial nets adapt quickly, others take some more time to unwind (ex: 20 years of shoulder pain will give us a few layers to work with). That's why every individual session is specialized and not from a template or routine, and is also why we take the stress out of the equation and work with you to create your custom wellness plan after your Discovery Session.
Our Policies
Our professional relationships with our clients are built on a foundation of mutual trust and respect.
As a condition of working with our practitioners, all clients must agree to the policies below.
Privacy Policy
Prior to your first appointment, you will be required to complete a confidential health history form. This form must be updated any time there are significant changes to your health history (ex. surgery, major illness).
The information in your file can only be released with your consent or as required by law. In order to best serve you, your practitioner may discuss your case with the other healthcare providers involved in your care.
Appointment Times & Booking
Our hours are by appointment only. We're open Monday-Friday unless otherwise posted.
For Discovery Sessions, we currently are not taking same-day appointments - bookings are open 24 hours prior to session start time. Please be sure you receive a confirmation email when scheduling your appointment to ensure that it's registered on our schedule.
Please note that the time you have booked is the length of your entire appointment, not necessarily the hands-on time total. Be assured that we strive to maximize your hands-on time. You should expect a minimum of 5 minutes of intake & assessment time within your session to measure progress. Our sessions are set up this way to be the most therapeutic for you, while also being able to measure notable change as part of it!
Cancellation Policy
Your session times are reserved exclusively for you. If you need to cancel or reschedule your session, there is no fee if notification is given at least 24 hours prior to your session.
Notification that is given less than 24 hours prior to the session time will result in a 100% charge of the service for Discovery Sessions, & a loss of that monthly session in regards to Signature Package holders.
We do understand that emergencies & illnesses do occur. If you or your children have a medical reason, a death in the family, or some other life altering/emergency event, please contact us as we may at our discretion waive the appointment fee. In cases of extreme weather conditions, if you do not feel safe traveling to our office, feel free to call and reschedule your appointment. There would not be a charge for this type of cancellation. If extenuating life circumstances occur, they will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
Early & Late Arrival
Please aim to arrive about five minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. This allows for a relaxed and unhurried experience before your session begins.
In the event that you may arrive late to your session, you will receive the remaining time scheduled (full price will still be charged OR the full session will still be deducted from your package/membership) to respect the neighboring appointment times scheduled that day. We will do our best to accommodate you if time allows.
Attire Requirements
For FlexBlend Sessions & your first Discovery Session, wear some form of mobile clothing - think workout clothes.
Wear comfortable, athletic-type clothing that is mobile, such as: leggings, shorts with compression shorts underneath (men and women), t-shirt or long-sleeve shirt. Feel free to reach out with any attire questions when it comes to stretch-focused sessions.
For massage integrations, the techniques used may involve draping methods (with a sheet & blanket) to ensure that your core is covered at all times. Feel free to reach out with any questions when it comes to massage segments of integrated sessions.
Refusal of Service
For safety purposes, we reserve the right to refuse or discontinue treatment at any time. Reasons may include, but are not limited to:
-
Intoxication
